Kerala Floods and Landslides: 123 Dead, Athirapally Falls in Focus

Kerala, India – The recent incidence of heavy rains in Kerala has had serious consequences, and many regions of the state and the country have reported the death of people in landslides, floods, and destruction as a result of floods. The situation has been worst in the northern part of the state especially in the Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.

 A video that has recently moved around the social media platforms is that of the strong current at Athirapally Falls, because of monsoon. The video analysis of the falls shows the current situation and contrast it to the state of the falls three years ago due to current rainfall. 

 Besides Athirapally Falls, visuals from Kozhikode district also seemed to raise much attention. Such a video shows a bus driving on a bridge with waters on both sides or describing the tense situations that people experienced. 

 According to the latest statistics there are now 123 reported deaths and at least 128 injured. The Head of the state of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan made this statement where they said that 93 bodies have been recovered in the Wayanad district. This has caused many cases of landslides which in turn has claimed many lives and some properties such as homes, roads and bridges have been washed away.

 To pay last respect to the deceased the Government of Kerala has declared July 30 and 31 as mourning day and all the state government programs have been deferred. The forest minister AK Saseendran said that the situation is critical and all means are being employed to save the trapped people. 

 The Indian Army along with two helicopters of the Indian air force is on rescue operation in affected areas. Such integrated response aims at establishing quick intervention to the affected communities as well as establishing a recovery process in the most impacted regions. 

 Regulatory bodies still follow the events closely, and the people are advised to remain safe and follow instructions from the leadership during this dangerous period.
