The Narendra Modi government gave the charge of the Cabinet Secretary to 1987 batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer TV Somanathan for a period of two years.
The Narendra Modi government on Saturday appointed 1987 batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) Officer TV Somanathan as the Cabinet Secretary for Two years. He is replacing Rajiv Gauba an IAS officer of the 1982 batch who served as Cabinet Secretary for an unprecedental five years.
“The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has also approved the appointment of Shri TV Somanathan, IAS (TN:87 continues as an officer on special duty in the cabinet secretariat from the date he assumes the assignment till he formally assumes the duties as the cabinet secretary,” the statement said.
Gauba became the cabinet secretary in 2019 for two years as a non-executive director. He was later given a year-extension in 2021 then in 2022 and 2023. It is reported that he was the brain of behind the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019 through which the erstwhile state was divided into two Union Territories following the abolishment of the Article 370.
Who is TV Somanathan?
Somanathan’s age is 53 years as of the year 2019 and he is a IAS officer of the 1987 batch in Tamil Nadu. : He has Ph. D. in Economics from Calcutta University.
Before his promotion as the finance secretary, he was the finance expenditure secretary from the year 2019 to the year 2021. He has succeeded Girish Chandra Murmu who was made the first LG of the newly formed Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
He also worked as a joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from January 2015 to July 2017 but as an Additional Secretary in the PMO later. Somanathan also has worked for a short time as joint secretary at the ministry of corporate affairs. He was also dispatched as a director of corporate affairs at the Wor ld Bank stationed in Washington DC.
