Meet Radhamani Amma: India’s Extraordinary Driving Enthusiast

73-year-old Indian woman

Anand Mahindra, the Chairperson of Mahindra & Mahindra, is renowned for sharing inspiring tales and championing innovation and technology on social media. Recently, he highlighted a remarkable achievement by a 73-year-old Indian woman. This remarkable woman, Radhamani Amma, has accomplished the incredible feat of obtaining eleven distinct driving licenses for various vehicle types.

Radhamani’s passion for life and her drive to explore new territories are truly inspiring. Anand Mahindra shared her story with enthusiasm, quoting, “An insatiable appetite for life…And a desire to leave behind her footprint—or her foot on as many pedals as possible. Age is truly just a number for her…She’s my #MondayMotivation.”

Radhamani Amma, hailing from Kerala, holds the distinction of being India’s sole woman with eleven driving licenses. She is legally authorized to drive cars and heavy vehicles throughout the country, including operating heavy-duty machinery such as JCBs and cranes. In India, driving licenses are categorized based on vehicle weight and capacity, covering two-wheelers, cars, light and heavy goods vehicles, buses, and specialized machinery.

After her husband’s tragic accident in 2004, Radhamani Amma took charge, supporting her family by managing their driving school. Inspired by her late husband, who established the A-Z Driving School in Thoppumpady during the 1970s, Radhamani obtained her initial bus and truck driving licenses in 1988. Her determination didn’t waver, and in 2021, she added a license for transporting hazardous goods to her impressive collection.
