Imphal, August 3, 2024 – This follows cases of landmine blast that continues to happen in the Kamjong district along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur Cm N. Biren Singh promised to investigate the cases. These abuses were brought to the notice of the house by MLA from Phungyar constituency Leishiyo Keishing in the 6th session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The MLA Leishiyo Keishing described the worrisome increase in blasts caused by landmines, especially between the International border pillar no 91 and 94. He informed that the forces such as the Assam Rifles that have been used as Border Guarding Forces for more than three decades are discharging functions that are more or less in the realm of civil agencies like the customs and forest departments.
Namely, Keishing elaborated on several recent occurrences, among those the landmine explosion that took place on May 1 at Namlee along the Namlee-Mansa (Myanmar) road when two motorcyclists were injured. Another case that occurred in the second week of May involved a refugee from Kamjong district dwelling in Aloyo, who was injured in the leg and foot after stepping on a landmine in Z Choro village. Additionally, on May 22, two people were wounded near Wanglee while on July 25, at Wanglee Market, a landmine exploded; one died and two, including a child, were left in critical condition.
Keishing alleged that Myanmar militants are planting these landmines to create panic among the people, who are living in the border areas.

In response to such a query, Chief Minister Singh was quick to inform the assembly that such cases would be thoroughly investigated. To probe the said incidents, the Armed Force’s Assam Rifles, state forces, and the police department’s Criminal Investigation Department will be deployed. The research results shall be presented to the concerned ministries; the Ministry of External Affairs in particular to take the necessary actions.
Singh was concerned with the severity of the situation given the global aspect of the matter and promised to personally follow up on the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs to initiate the proper course of action on the matter. He lamented the impact of the border violence on the lives and property of the residents as well as called for efforts to end cases of fear and living in anticipation of another act of violence.
