Gautam Gambhir has replaced Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Will be shown in a different avatar for the first time for Team India, Gambhir is honoured to be back in the Indian cricket team. On Tuesday, The two-time World Cup winner officially replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the ruling T20 World Champions.
Under Dravid’s guidance, India became the first men’s team to win a T20 World Cup without dropping a single game in the ICC event. After succeeding as the Indian team’s head coach, Gambhir praised Rahul for his commendable victory. Dravid leads Team India to three ICC finals. Under Dravid’s guidance, Team India also lifted the Asia Cup trophy last year.
In his final season as head coach, Due to Dravid’s guidance India’s long wait for a World Cup has ended as Rohit Sharma’s Team India lifted the ICC World T20 trophy for the second time in the Caribbean. While Dravid not increasing his services to Team India, Gambhir was appointed to take over the coaching in the Men in Blue after the ICC event. Secretary of BCCI Jay Shah said in a statement
“We thank Mr Rahul Dravid and his team of support staff for their service and stellar effort in their tenure with Team India. The team enjoyed remarkable success across formats and being crowned champions at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, in 2024 is a moment that the nation will cherish for a long time. The baton now passes on to Mr Gautam Gambhir who will don the role of Head Coach from the forthcoming series in Sri Lanka,”.
Gambhir also congratulates Rahul Dravid
“It is an absolute honour to serve my tricolour, my people, my country. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his team of support staff for their exemplary run with the team. I am honoured and excited to take on the role of Head Coach for Team India,” Gambhir said after BCCI confirmed the appointment of the former India opener.
Gambhir is also thinking of collaborating with VVS Laxman, who is in Zimbabwe as India’s stand-in head coach for the five-match T20I series. After the tour to Zimbabwe, India will host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many One Day Internationals (ODIs). The first assignment of the new head coach would be the upcoming Sri Lanka series.
Gambhir added, “I have always taken pride in donning the Indian jersey during my playing days and it is going to be no different when I take up this new role. Cricket has been my passion and I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, the Head of Cricket – Mr VVS Laxman, the support staff, and, most importantly, the players, as we work towards achieving success in the upcoming tournaments,”.
