Record Rainfall in Mumbai Disrupts Flights, Roads, and Railways

Mumbai – 25 July 2024 – Record rain in Mumbai has led to pan-)rea resettlement issues at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the comprehensive transport system of the city. The thunderstorm resulted to the temporary shutdown of operations at the airport at around ten thirty – six a. m. this was after the visibility of aircrafts was<|reserved_special_token_265|>ed. The category A operations then continued at 10:55 a. m. due to the increase in visibility of more than 1000m with the RVR recorded at 1200m.

 Road and Rail Disruptions

 Weather Warnings 

 The nowcast issued by the IMD at 10:00 a. m. suggested intense to very spells of rainfall in isolated parts of Mumbai city, its neighboring cities, Thane, Raigad, and the ghats of Pune for the next 3-4 hours. 

 Local Infrastructure Impact 

 Some of the places that have been affected involve the Bhandup pumping station, Vikhroli and near king circle. Earlier around 6:00 a. m. today an uprooted tree at Kalanagar near Matoshree Bungalow in Bandra East compelled the BEST buses to take a temporary diversion for nearly one hour.

Related Incidents 

 Regarding human casualties due to the heavy rain, four people perished in Pune. It has impacted schools and there have been issues with closure. The Arm and Air force has been put on standby for rescue missions.
