New Delhi: – As earlier highlighted the large number of landslides that have occurred of late have caused a lot of distress to the region and the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is expected to be in Wayanad today to establish the current status of the relief and rehabilitation initiatives being conducted. The tragedy, which has already taken over 400 lives, raised much demand to recognize the situation as a ‘national disaster,’ Nevertheless, the governance stressed that there is no such term used in the center’s classification system.
This made no provision even for declaring a ‘National Disaster’.
Former Congress VP in Lok Sabha and the current leader of the Indian opposition, Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad, has acted as the prompter in encouraging the central government to declare the calamity a national disaster. ‘ Nonetheless, the BJP highlighted a parliamentary reply by Mullappally Ramachandran, the former Minister of State for Home, that there is no provision in the central government rules that allows defining a natural disaster as a national The policy has not changed from the period of Congress-led UPA government and then the present BJP led NDA government.
Similarly, stressed former Union Minister Muraleedharan, communes are mainly answerable for the beginning of the aid delivery expeditions in the wake of natural disasters. He added that those requirements may be supplemented from the NDRF where necessary for grave calamities by the regulation.
Centre’s Swift Response to the Crisis
Accordingly, the Modi government acted smartly and within a short time deployed more than 1200 personnel of NRDF, Army, Air Force, Navy, Fire Service, and civil defense to join the operation in rescue and relief operations in the hit areas. More than 100 ambulances and many doctors and other paramedical staff are also present to treat the affected people.
One of the significant elements of the operation was the construction of a 190-foot Bailey bridge by the Indian army which was accomplished in 71 hours only. Cars, ambulances, and other heavy machinery have been able to cross this bridge providing rescue to about 200 people who were stuck because of the broken tracks.

IMCT to visit the affected area/s
The issues of extremism have also led the central government to form an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to visit the affected areas of Wayanad. This team will do a follow-up on the situation and see to it that all the support needed for the continuation of the relief and rehabilitation processes is availed.
The landslides that occurred in Mundakki, Chooralmala and Vellarimala villages all located in Wayanad on 30-07-2012 are regarded as one of the worst calamities to have fallen on Kerala in the recent past. Still, numerous people have not been found as people continue the search and rescue efforts.
