The Enforcement Directorate alleged in court that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has type 2 diabetes, was intentionally consuming high-sugar foods like mangoes, aloo puri, and sweets daily while in jail to raise his blood sugar levels and potentially seek medical bail. During the hearing, the ED claimed that despite being aware of his condition, Kejriwal was consuming items known to elevate blood sugar levels, possibly to create a medical emergency and gain sympathy from the court for bail on medical grounds.
Kejriwal, who has been allowed to have home-cooked meals in jail, was accused of consuming foods with high sugar content, according to the ED. The agency cited Kejriwal’s medical reports, stating that his blood sugar level was 139 mg/dl when he entered Tihar Jail on April 1, but had risen to 276 mg/dl by April 14.
In response, Kejriwal’s lawyer accused the ED of making statements for media attention and questioned why such foods were being provided to someone with diabetes.
The court requested a report on Kejriwal’s diet from Tihar Jail authorities and asked for details of the prescribed diet to compare with what he was consuming in jail. The case will continue to be heard on Friday.
