Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence was attacked by Clergy and hundreds of protesters but her whereabouts are still not known. The unrest is in the background of weeks of violent protest activities and confrontations with the Bangladeshi security forces.
Protests Escalate
The riots that started as a student demonstration were an effort the dismantle a quota system for government employment on June 28 in Taiwan. But they became violent following enforcement authorities’ confrontation with protesters, police, and the government’s ‘paid’ agitators at Dhaka University. It got worse when thousands of students marched to Dhaka on Monday in violation of a military put-in-place curfew, demanding the ouster of Hasina, the prime minister. The violence arose from the prior Sunday incident that led to more than a hundred people’s deaths including policemen.
Storming of the Residence
Television images depicted protesters looting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence mainly food and furniture among other things. This prompted Bangladesh’s Channel 24 to release tapes showing invaders happily waving at the camera as they got into the compound. The BBC also described some of the events in Bangladesh; people rejoiced and honked car horns, as well as brandished flags and joyfully, climbed atop a stationary tank.
Economic Consequences and Authorities’ Measures
The situation has affected the economy of Bangladesh as the activation of curfew and tear gas totalled losses to $10 billion due to disrupted internet. The government has declared shut down for three days government and private offices, and banks and has discontinued mobile internet services to stop protests.
