Fernando especially scored a stunning 96 runs for the team while Wellalage bowled a stunning five wickets to help Sri Lanka to clinch the victory. This series was India’s first venture in the one-day arrangement after they surrendered to Australia in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup last November and before the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.

The Indian captain Rohit Sharma was worried about the team’s performance while playing against spin bowling saying that the team did not have the luxury of dominating on a turning pitch. While speaking to the media at the post-match press conference, Sharma thought that Sri Lankan batters are better at playing sweep shots which was a tactic not properly used by India.

“They were having good sweeps, taking their opportunities. They did not use their feet as much as we thought they would but they had dominated heavily the area around the square of the wicket, an area in which Australians failed to dominate as a batting unit,” Sharma said. He also expressed satisfaction with the opening stand between Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando, which was contributing the most to Sri Lanka’s total.

He agreed India had a weak show against the Lankan spinners and said that teams must learn to play on spinning tracks. “The fielders specifically spinning and playing on turning tracks are relieved to find their ways of handling spinning. ”

Rohit also observed that the runs accumulation in the powerplay phase is very crucial on slow surfaces. “To get as many runs as possible, especially the first 10 overs,” he also said.

Continuing with some fight from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Washington Sundar India folded at 138 all out in 26 overs. 1 over of power play, starting their batting at needing 249 more runs.

Dunith Wellalage was privileged to be awarded ‘Player of the Match’ as well as being declared ‘Player of the Series’ for his all-round brilliance for the entire series.
